Medical University of Gdańsk

The Medical University of Gdańsk (MUG) is the largest medical university in northern Poland, located in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with an old town and beautiful sandy beaches. According to the 2020 higher education ranking of the Perspektywy Education Foundation, the MUG is the first medical school in the country and ranks among the top ten of the best Polish state universities. The Medical University of Gdańsk has been acknowledged as the member of an elite group of the best 10 Polish universities awarded in the prestigious Excellence Initiative – Research University program. Since 2020 the MUG is a partner in the Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk together with the Gdańsk University of Technology and the University of Gdańsk. This local collaboration is a potential opportunity to attract top international and national students, Ph.D. students, and researchers.


There are 3 270 foreigners studying in Gdańsk who are coming from 44 countries. The most numerous group are students of the MUG, being over 30% of their total number. Our University therefore maintains a status of the most internationalized University in Pomeranian. The medicine is definitely a favourite field, studied by nearly 1 000 people in Gdańsk. It’s worth noting that in the whole country it was 2nd most often choosen field of studies among foreign students. 7 828 students has been studying it in which nearly 1 000 in our University. We place great emphasis on practical learning a profession thanks to modern medical simulation labs or a training drugstore at the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Getting around

The city of Gdańsk is a meeting place of many nationalities and cultures. It is also an important commercial and communication route, an extensive port with mercantile traditions. Please visit the City of Gdańsk website for more information about the history of the city, interesting places to visit and what local organisations can offer for the newcomers.


For those who stay in Gdańsk for some time, a great solution is a City Card. It’s an electronic card, which can store a season ticket selected by the holder and is valid in Gdańsk public transport. E-ticket does not have to be validated. It is verified by the ticket inspector with a reader. Tram and bus services in Gdańsk are operated by the ZTM Gdańsk.

Gdańsk is a biker-friendly place with more and more bicycle paths and routes. Bike paths running along sea shore from Sopot to Gdańsk and Gdynia (the three cities that together form the Tricity metropolitan area). The fastest and cheapest way to go across the Tricity is to take the SKM train (Szybka Kolej Miejska/Fast City Rail).

Welcome Point of the MUG

A friendly space where foreign students and guests can receive all necessary help in facing numerous problems related to living in Poland, Gdańsk and starting their studies at the Medical University of Gdańsk. The main purpose of the Welcome Point at the MUG is to manage an information and counseling centre which helps with the issues of residency, visa and many other parallel matters which the foreigners may find troubling. It also actively cooperates with the academic community in terms of integration of our new incoming students.

Orientation Week

The MUG offers all its new students and incoming Erasmus students a one-week orientation programme before the beginning of the academic year. A number of activities are designed to introduce students to the realities of school life in MUG and to formally induct new students into the profession of medicine.

Accommodation

Every student of the MUG or a student who comes to study at the MUG under the lifelong learning programme (or bilateral agreements signed by the MUG) can live in one of the MUG dormitories.

The dormitories are situated on campus, very close to the didactic buildings. The campus consists of four dormitories with space for 1000 students. It is the location of the Student Government. There is also a canteen nearby which offers meals at student-friendly prices and the ‘Medyk’ student club. All the dormitories have an internet connection.

Prices may vary depending on new regulations that may be imposed each academic year.

Sports Centre of the MUG

The Sports Centre building includes a sports arena (1100 square meters) with futsal, handball, basketball and volleyball pitches, as well as gymnasiums for aerobics, squash, Asian martial arts and wrestling. There is also a tribune for 748 seats, gym lockers and showers, fully accessible, as well as an underground garage with 103 parking spaces and stands for 22 bicycles.



Students of the MUG:

  • actively participate in national and international symposia
  • can use one of the largest medical libraries in the region and modern teaching and clinical infrastructure
  • are recognized and rewarded for their scientific and charitable activities by national and international organizations in contests and scholarships, such as the Interstudent or Czerwona Róża contest
  • undertake valuable initiatives for the benefit of the Pomeranian region and Poland in general
  • popularize knowledge about health, disease prevention and treatment methods in society
  • are in 113 students scientific circle
  • can join international students organisations such as PHIDE Gdańsk – Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity or International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA)
  • organize events focused on prevention, e.g. White Saturdays, Vampiriads, Marrow Hero, Tram Called Desire.
